Improving the existing infrastructure and providing efficient amenities to government offices are focus areas under the initial project
In an attempt to foster employment opportunities and improve the existing infrastructure, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Private Industry and Investment Adviser, Salman F Rahman, recently presented the project plan to develop the two upazilas of his constituency, Dohar and Nawabganj into model upazilas. He named the project ‘Nagarnama- Bosobaser Vobissot (Living for future)’.
He spoke about improving the existing infrastructure in the region, which would include a four-lane road, reducing the travel time between Nawabganj-Dohar and Dhaka from the existing 2 hours to just 30 minutes. He also said, we can also reopen the old waterway from Dhaka, if the project is well-implemented.
This recent news of creating model upazilas is a follow-up of government’s approval for the development of economic zones in Dohar-Nawabganj, efforts of which were led by Salman F Rahman himself. However, it was during the election campaign of the 2018, he promised to establish an economic zone in the area.
Speaking about the initial project plan of “Kolakopa Civic District”, he said, the region would be developed both economically and socially. Under the project, all the government offices would get amenities such as proper electricity, communication, among others. Also, the project would be implemented through Public Private Partnership (PPP) and is likely to cost Tk 350 crore, Salman F Rahman further said.
Various business persons and cultural personalities such as Kazi Kahlid Ashraf, Bengal Institute’s director and architect, Nasrul Hamid, state minister for power, energy and mineral resources also stressed on the importance of the project design at the event.
Later, in an effort to reduce poverty, Salman F Rahman donated 18 cows and 30 sewing machines to the poor in Joypara Bazar of Dohar upazila. “Under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina, we will eradicate poverty very quickly. It is her main goal,” he said.
