Essay Writing for Beginners

The structure of an essay is generally free, unless a certain structure is required by your teacher. The structure of most essays consists of an introduction, central part and a conclusion.

In this article, we will start from the structure for the most common essay writing service in an academic context, the demonstration essay.

Prior to

Before you start writing, you need to know what conclusion you are attributing to. A few may find out during the writing process, but many will lose the thread when they just start writing. Think about what you want to say in each paragraph and write it down briefly in a diagram.

Preface

The introduction should make the reader curious about the content of the essay. It is a good idea to use a (personal) anecdote, comment on a current news item or ask some relevant questions. State the background and reason for the topic. At the end of the introduction, it should be clear where you want to go with your essay.

Central part

In the central part of your essay you will argue. You give your vision on the subject. For example, clarify why the current situation does not work, what alternative there is and why this alternative does work.

Your argumentation must be reliable in order to be convincing, so use sufficient sources. Do not assume that the facts from these sources speak for themselves, but explain to the reader why this source supports your point of view.

Tips

Keep the argument concise: don’t expand on unimportant details.

The first (or sometimes the second sentence) of the paragraph should override the rest of the paragraph. You explain this sentence in the rest of the paragraph.

In addition to just arguments for it, you can also use counterarguments by refuting them in your argument. Please note that your rebuttal is convincingly better than the counter argument used.

Conclusion

The conclusion should follow logically from the preceding section of your essay. Look back at the introduction: what did you want to convince the reader of? Explain how the argumentation part leads to the final conclusion.

End the conclusion catchy, for example with a powerful one-liner. Make the conclusion stick with the reader.

Reader

In the above text the reader has been quoted regularly, but who is this reader? In general, you can assume that the reader is a reasonably informed, interested and educated person, for example readers of a magazine like ‘Elsevier’.

Writing style

An essay is less formal than other scientific genres such as a thesis, but it is still serious. You often score points with an original wording, but don’t go crazy.

To what extent an informal or personal style is appreciated depends on your teacher. Be clear too. A difficult writing style may seem interesting, but you better make sure that all readers understand the essay effortlessly.

Sources

The source list may vary from scientific literature to popular scientific texts and from websites to current reports from the media. Always use the correct reference style when citing the source.
